Northumberland

A weekend away in a stunningly beautiful part of the country with Iconic castles and coastlines

Blue Hour Magic at Bamburgh Castle ISO100 25mm F11 2.5sec

My Wife and i recently took a trip over to the North East coast for a long weekend taking in Bamburgh and Lindisfarne. It was time well spent, Mental batteries properly recharged and a chance to reconnect. i chose these locations to also scratch my photography itch. i don’t feel like i’ve had the camera in my hands much this year and there have been some disappointing results. The weather forecast looked promising and whth the subjects i had in mind, i thought i’d be on it a winner. On this occasion, i was right.

I was making my way back to the hotel when i noticed the castle reflection appear again the the wet sand. i had the camera on my PD Design capture clip so was able to quickly access it to get this ‘Run ‘n’ Gun’ shot

After the impressive sunrise at Bamburgh, we moved on to Lindisfarne for our second nights stay. we had checked in and i wanted to check out the famous Boat Sheds and the iconic castle. The light was flat so i was really just practicing compositions.

Everything Changed in a heartbeat

As i was lining up the boats in my frame the sun began to peak out and flood the scene with golden light, the kind of light you only get at sunset. I turned around to find the flat scene transformed. The two images below show why us photographers always say we are chasing the light and what a difference a matter of minutes can make!

Castle Stone and old wood glowing in the evening sun

For the last day of my Northumberland Adventure, i though i’d push my luck. The previous day i’d had excellent conditions at both sunrise and sunset so with expectations set i left Deb in the cozy bed while my wellies and I made our way back to the castle hoping for similar conditions as the morning before.

This image is an example of an almost…

The Sun broke the horison and almost right away went behind a cloud. i thought is was all over but a small gap in the clouds and just for a few seconds light hit the castle. subtle colour began to spread in the sky and uttered the magic words that every landscape photographer knows will kill the scene if said outloud “Its Happening” i said just as the light began to fade. 10 seconds of light is all i got. - Totally Worth it!
